Small businesses are at the heart of Chelmsford’s success. This UK Small Business Week 2026, we’re celebrating the entrepreneurs, independents and growing companies that shape our city every day.

From long-established local favourites to new start-ups finding their feet, small businesses play a vital role in creating a vibrant, resilient and diverse economy.

A City Built on Small Business

Chelmsford’s economy is built on a strong base of small businesses. Around 99% of businesses in the city are small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), supporting thousands of local jobs and contributing significantly to the £5.6 billion local economy.

This strong entrepreneurial base continues to drive growth across a wide range of sectors—from retail and hospitality to professional services and innovation-led industries—helping position Chelmsford as a thriving place to do business.

Supporting Local Independents

Chelmsford is proud to support a wide range of independent businesses alongside well-known brands, helping to create a distinctive and welcoming city centre and neighbourhood high streets.

One such business is The Farm Shop on Moulsham Street, which has been serving the local community since 2011. Reflecting on the importance of supporting independent businesses, the team said:

When you visit an independent, you know your money is benefitting other members of the community.”

Businesses like The Farm Shop highlight the wider impact of shopping locally—supporting jobs, strengthening communities and keeping Chelmsford’s high streets diverse and vibrant.

Opportunities for New Businesses

Chelmsford is also a place where new ideas can grow. Chelmsford Market provides an accessible platform for entrepreneurs to test their business concepts, build a customer base and develop their offer.

Ignite Darts, who joined the market in 2025, are one example of a newer business benefiting from this opportunity. Founders Gareth and Keiran said:

Since November 2025, we’ve shared our love of the sport and our expert knowledge with customers.”

A Place to Start and Grow

Whether it’s an independent retailer, a market trader or a scaling SME, small businesses are central to Chelmsford’s identity and future.

As we celebrate UK Small Business Week, it’s an opportunity to recognise the contribution these businesses make - not just to the economy, but to the character and success of the city.
